How to Measure Your Visibility in AI Search

Appearing in an AI-generated answer can place your business in front of someone while they are researching a service, comparing providers or deciding what to buy.

But how do you know whether your business is actually visible?

Measuring AI search visibility isn’t as simple as checking one Google ranking. Different platforms can produce different answers. Results may also change according to the wording of a question, the user’s location and the sources available at that time.

A business might be mentioned by ChatGPT, cited by Google AI Overviews and completely absent from Perplexity. It might appear for one question but not for another that seems almost identical.

Proper AI visibility tracking brings these signals together. It shows where your brand appears, why it may have been selected and what needs to improve.

What Is AI Search Visibility?

AI search visibility describes how often and how prominently a business, brand or website appears within AI-generated search results.

These results can be found across:

  • Google AI Overviews

  • Google AI Mode

  • ChatGPT Search

  • Microsoft Copilot

  • Gemini

  • Perplexity

  • Other AI-powered research and answer platforms

Visibility can take several forms. Your business might be named in an answer, included within a shortlist, recommended ahead of competitors or used as a cited source.

These outcomes aren’t all equal.

A link to one of your articles shows that the content was useful to the answer. A direct recommendation of your business may have far greater commercial value. Being named first in a shortlist could also carry more weight than a brief mention near the bottom.

This is why measuring AI visibility requires more than counting links.

Start With the Questions Your Customers Ask

The quality of AI reporting depends on the prompts being tracked.

A prompt is the question or instruction entered into an AI platform. For example:

  • Which dealer management system is best for an independent dealership?

  • What are the best corporate party venues in Chester?

  • Who installs aluminium windows in Suffolk?

  • Which VAT consultancy can support an international retailer?

  • What should I look for when choosing an SEO agency?

These questions are often longer and more detailed than traditional search terms. They may include a location, business type, problem, budget or purchasing need.

Start by identifying the questions that could lead someone towards your business. These should cover different stages of the customer’s decision.

Early research prompts

These are broad questions asked when someone is trying to understand a subject or solve a problem.

Examples might include:

  • What causes condensation inside double-glazed windows?

  • What does dealer management software do?

  • How can I improve my company’s visibility in ChatGPT?

Comparison prompts

These appear when a potential customer is comparing products, services or providers.

Examples include:

  • What are the best dealer management systems?

  • Which AI SEO agencies provide visibility reporting?

  • What is the difference between aluminium and uPVC windows?

Purchase-focused prompts

These suggest that the user may be closer to making contact or buying.

Examples include:

  • Recommend an SEO agency that works with businesses across the UK.

  • Which companies install aluminium bifold doors in Essex?

  • Who can help my business appear in Google AI Overviews?

A good tracking set should include all three types. However, more weight should usually be given to prompts that could lead to an enquiry or sale.

Tracking hundreds of vague questions may create an impressive report, but it won’t always provide useful business insight.

We used this approach for a multi-location leisure business, where Google AI visibility increased by around 68% within one month. See the SEO and AI search case study.

Measure How Often Your Brand Is Mentioned

Brand mentions are one of the clearest AI visibility measures.

This metric shows the percentage of tracked answers in which your business appears. If your company is mentioned in 25 out of 100 prompt responses, its measured brand presence would be 25%.

You should also look at:

  • Which platforms mention the business

  • Which prompts produce a mention

  • Whether the mention is positive, neutral or negative

  • How prominently the business appears

  • Whether a service, product or location is described correctly

  • How performance changes over time

A mention doesn’t always include a link. AI platforms can name a business without citing its website directly. This still matters, particularly when the answer is helping someone compare providers.

We’ve seen this in our own tests at Improve Marketing. A platform may understand what a company offers and recommend it for a relevant search, even when the final response doesn’t link directly to every source used during its research.

This is one reason why website analytics alone cannot provide a complete view of AI visibility.

Track Your Position Within AI Answers

Traditional SEO reports often focus on a numerical ranking. AI answers don’t always follow such a tidy structure, but position still matters.

If a response provides a list of recommended businesses, you can record whether your brand was:

  • Mentioned first

  • Included within the top three

  • Included lower in the answer

  • Mentioned without being recommended

  • Not mentioned at all

You can then compare this position with your closest competitors.

This helps answer an important question: when an AI platform considers your market, does it see your business as a leading option or just one of many?

Position shouldn’t be viewed in isolation. AI answers change, and a business shown first today may appear third tomorrow. Trends across a consistent group of prompts are more meaningful than one favourable result.

Monitor the Sources and Citations Being Used

Citations show which websites or pages have been used to support an AI-generated answer.

These may include:

  • Your own service and product pages

  • Blog articles and guides

  • Case studies

  • News websites

  • Industry publications

  • Business directories

  • Review platforms

  • Partner websites

  • Professional profiles

  • Research and public data

Citation tracking helps you understand which sources AI platforms trust for a particular subject.

If your own pages are being cited, you can identify the content that is already performing well. You can then strengthen it, link to it more clearly and build related pages around the same subject.

If competitors are being cited instead, examine why. Their pages may answer the question more clearly, provide stronger evidence or cover an important part of the topic that your website has missed.

Third-party citations can be just as revealing. An AI platform may rely on an industry article, review website or directory when deciding which businesses to recommend.

This can point towards opportunities for digital PR, profile development and relevant link building.

Compare Your Visibility With Competitors

AI visibility makes more sense when viewed within the wider market.

A 20% brand mention rate could be strong if every competitor sits below 10%. It may be weak if the market leader appears in 70% of the same responses.

Competitor reporting should examine:

  • Overall brand presence

  • First-position mentions

  • Platform coverage

  • Citation frequency

  • Prompts won and lost

  • Pages being cited

  • Third-party sources supporting each brand

This doesn’t mean copying whatever a competitor has done. It helps reveal the subjects and sources shaping AI answers within your market.

You might find that a competitor is being recommended because it has stronger location pages. Another may benefit from detailed comparison content, better reviews or coverage from respected industry websites.

Once you understand the gap, you can decide whether the answer lies in content, authority, technical work or clearer brand information.

Use Google Search Console’s Generative AI Report

Google has introduced a dedicated Generative AI performance report within Search Console. It shows how often links to your website appear within supported generative AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.

The report can show:

  • Total generative AI impressions

  • Changes in impressions over time

  • Pages appearing in AI features

  • Countries where visibility occurs

  • Performance by device

  • Daily, weekly and monthly trends

Google is rolling the report out gradually, so it may not yet appear within every Search Console account. A website may also need enough AI impressions before useful data becomes available.

The report is valuable because it gives website owners data directly from Google. However, it doesn’t replace prompt tracking. It can show which pages received impressions, but it may not provide the full detail needed to understand every question, competing brand or recommendation.

Use it alongside wider AI visibility monitoring, not as the only measure.

Check AI Referral Traffic and Website Behaviour

Some AI platforms send visitors to websites through cited links. These visits may appear within Google Analytics or another website analytics platform.

Look for referral traffic from sources linked to platforms such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot.

You can then review:

  • Sessions from AI platforms

  • Landing pages visited

  • Engagement

  • Enquiries and form completions

  • Sales or revenue

  • Assisted conversions

  • Returning visitors

Referral traffic is useful, but it only tells part of the story.

Someone may see your business recommended by an AI platform and then search for your name through Google. They might visit your website directly or contact you later. That journey may not be recorded as an AI referral.

An AI mention can therefore influence a sale without receiving direct credit in your analytics.

This is much like other forms of brand marketing. Not every useful exposure produces an immediate, neatly tracked click.

Connect Visibility With Commercial Results

More mentions are encouraging, but visibility should support a business goal.

The strongest reporting connects AI performance with wider search and commercial data. Depending on the business, this could include:

  • Organic traffic

  • Branded searches

  • Enquiries

  • Telephone calls

  • Trial registrations

  • Online sales

  • Revenue

  • Lead quality

  • Cost per acquisition

You won’t always be able to attribute a sale directly to a single AI answer. Even so, you can look for patterns.

If brand mentions, AI impressions, branded searches and enquiries all rise over the same period, the combined data provides a more useful picture than any one figure alone.

It is also worth asking new customers how they found you. A simple form field or a question during the sales process may reveal enquiries influenced by ChatGPT or another AI platform.

Measure Visibility Consistently Over Time

AI-generated answers can change from one test to the next.

For useful reporting, keep the core process consistent:

  1. Select a fixed group of commercially relevant prompts.

  2. Track them across the platforms used by your customers.

  3. Record mentions, position and citations.

  4. Compare performance with named competitors.

  5. Review which pages and third-party sources appear.

  6. Repeat the process at regular intervals.

  7. Connect the findings with traffic, enquiries and sales.

Avoid changing every prompt each month. A stable set allows you to measure movement. New questions can still be added as your services, market and customer behaviour develop.

It is often more useful to track 50 strong prompts consistently than 500 weak ones once.

What Can AI Visibility Reporting Tell You?

Good reporting should do more than confirm whether your brand appeared.

It should help you decide what to do next.

The findings may show that you need to:

  • Improve an existing service page

  • Publish a detailed guide

  • Add clearer evidence or case studies

  • Strengthen internal links

  • Resolve a technical SEO issue

  • Gain coverage from a trusted industry source

  • Improve business profiles and listings

  • Build stronger reviews

  • Clarify your services, locations or expertise

  • Target a new group of customer questions

This turns AI tracking into a practical search strategy.

Without that next step, reports can become little more than a collection of interesting screenshots.

Don’t Treat One AI Result as a Ranking

It is tempting to run one prompt, see your business appear first and declare the campaign a success.

That result is still worth recording, but it isn’t enough on its own.

AI answers may vary according to:

  • The exact wording of the prompt

  • The platform being used

  • The user’s location

  • Previous conversation context

  • Changes to available web content

  • Updates to the AI model

  • The date and time of the search

A stronger measure comes from repeated visibility across a carefully selected set of prompts.

The aim is not to force the same answer every time. It is to increase the likelihood that your business is understood, cited and recommended when the right people ask relevant questions.

Build a Clearer Picture of Your AI Search Presence

AI search visibility can be measured, but it needs a wider view than traditional keyword tracking.

Brand mentions, answer position, citations, competitor presence, Google AI impressions and referral traffic all provide part of the picture. Commercial outcomes then show whether that visibility is helping the business.
